People send me ingredient lists. Screenshots, usually two of them side by side, with a question that amounts to: these look the same, so why is one four times the price?
It is a fair question. It is also unanswerable from a label.
The reason has nothing to do with anything sinister in the fine print. It is what an ingredient list is for. It is a disclosure document, and it was never designed to tell you whether something works.
Here is what it can tell you, what it cannot, and what I would look at instead.
The one percent rule
Start with the thing almost nobody knows, because everything else follows from it.
Ingredients are listed in descending order of concentration. That part is true, and it is why people are told to check whether water is first.
But the rule only holds down to one percent.
Below one percent, ingredients can be listed in any order the manufacturer likes.
Now think about where most actives live. Peptides, many botanical extracts, most preservatives, vitamins, anything expensive or potent. Almost all of it sits under one percent.
Which means the part of the label people scrutinize hardest is the part that is in no meaningful order at all. A brand can put its most impressive-sounding ingredient at the front of that unordered section, and it is telling you only that there is at least a trace of it in the bottle.
You cannot tell, from a list, whether an extract is at 5% or 0.01%. Both look identical on paper.
The same name covers very different things
This is the one that matters most to me, because it is where the actual quality lives.
Take rosehip oil. On a label it is Rosa Canina Fruit Oil. One name.
That name covers oil that was cold-pressed from fresh seed and bottled quickly, deep orange, smells like something, full of carotenoids and intact fatty acids.
It also covers oil that has been refined, bleached and deodorized until it is pale yellow and smells of nothing, because that version is more stable, more consistent batch to batch, and considerably cheaper.
Same three words on the label. Different materials. Wildly different antioxidant content.
The refining exists for a reason, and the reason is not skin. It is shelf life and predictability. A stripped oil sits in a warehouse for two years without changing. An unrefined one does not, which is exactly why it still has something in it.
And there is no field on an ingredient list for any of that.
Age does not appear either
An oil pressed three months ago and an oil pressed three years ago have identical labels.
They do not have identical chemistry. Oils oxidize. The delicate fatty acids and antioxidants degrade first, which are precisely the parts you were buying.
This is why we make in small batches every week rather than producing a year of stock and warehousing it. The interval between when a material is at its best and when it reaches your face is the single variable with the most influence on whether it does anything, and it is completely invisible on a label. The weekly batches are about that interval, not about romance.
The same goes for the plant itself. Botanicals vary by harvest, by season, by rainfall. That is why our toners and the more pigmented formulas shift in color from one batch to the next. It is a sign of a living material, and it is another thing an ingredient list flattens into a single fixed name.
What happened after the ingredients went in
A list is a record of what entered the room. It says nothing about what happened next.
Heat matters. Many polyphenols and vitamins degrade at temperatures that are entirely routine in manufacturing. Whether a formula was heated and when the sensitive material was added, before or after cooling, changes what survives. Two identical lists, two different products.
Order matters. So does pH. An acid at the wrong pH is inert. An active in the wrong company is unavailable to your skin.
And the supporting cast matters more than people expect. Emulsifiers, solubilizers and film formers decide whether an active can reach living skin at all or simply sits on the surface until you wash it off. Those ingredients look boring on a label. They are often the difference.
The gaps that are allowed on purpose
Two more, briefly.
Fragrance. The word fragrance, or parfum, is permitted to stand in for a blend of many components, protected as a trade secret. One word can conceal dozens of materials. If a product lists it, you have less information than the label length suggests.
Contains. When front-of-pack copy says a product contains something wonderful, that claim survives at any concentration above zero. Contains is a yes-or-no, never a dose.
So what should you look at
The list is still useful, just for narrower questions than people ask of it.
It will tell you what a formula is built on, because the ingredients above one percent are in real order. If the first several are water, a silicone and a filler, you know what you are buying regardless of what is further down.
It will tell you whether something you personally react to is present.
It will tell you whether a brand is padding a list to look impressive.
For everything else, the questions worth asking are not on the label at all. How fresh is it. In what condition were the raw materials. At what concentration. What does the brand say when you ask them directly.
That last one is the real test. A brand that formulates its own products can answer those questions in specifics. A brand that buys a stock formula and puts its name on it cannot, and you will hear the difference immediately.
How we do it, since it would be strange not to say
F19 Just Fruit Antioxidant Serum, from $82, is the clearest example in our line. It runs on polyphenols from fresh fruit, blueberry and pomegranate among them. On a label that is a handful of botanical names that any brand could print. The difference is that the fruit material goes in fresh and at a concentration that does something, which is why the serum smells like fruit rather than like a fragrance meant to suggest it.
F3 Hydration & Skin Plumping Bio-Serum, also from $82, makes the same point from the other direction. Fresh Bulgarian rose, rosehip and pomegranate, unrefined, alongside a bioactive algae extract. It separates in the bottle and needs a shake before use, because there are no synthetic emulsifiers holding the water phase and the oil phase together. That separation is the honest consequence of the formula. A stabilizer would fix the appearance and cost you the thing you bought.

The short version
The ingredient list is the shopping list. It is not the meal.
It tells you what was bought. It cannot tell you how fresh it was, how much of it there is, what temperature it saw, what order it went in, or whether any of it can still do the job by the time it reaches you.
Two products can share a list and be nothing alike. That is simply what a label is.
