I formulate in Las Vegas, where the humidity in August sits in the single digits. It turns out to be a very good place to learn what hyaluronic acid actually does.
Here is the pattern I see constantly.
Someone buys the serum everyone recommends. They pat it onto dry skin, in a dry room, and wait to look dewy.
Twenty minutes later their face feels tight.
So they use more. And it gets worse.
The product is fine. So is the person using it. What they have run into is a humectant doing precisely what a humectant does, in conditions nobody warned them about.
Here is the whole mechanism.
What hyaluronic acid actually is
Hyaluronic acid, technically hyaluronan, is a sugar molecule your body already makes. It sits in the spaces between your cells, in your joints, in your eyes, and all through the dermal layer of your skin. Its job is to hold water.
It is very good at that job. It can bind up to a thousand times its own weight in water.
It is not an acid in the way people mean when they say acid. It does not exfoliate. It does not sting. It has nothing in common with glycolic or salicylic acid except a word on a label that scares people off a perfectly gentle ingredient.
The part nobody explains
Hyaluronic acid does not contain water.
It moves water.
It is a humectant, which means it works by attracting moisture and holding onto it. Put it on skin and it immediately starts looking for water to bind. If the air around you is humid, it draws from the air. That is where the plump, dewy look comes from, and it is why the same serum feels miraculous in a Florida summer.
If the air is dry, it still needs to pull from somewhere.
So it pulls from you. From the deeper, wetter layers of your own skin, up toward the surface, where the dry air takes it.
That tight feeling is the molecule working exactly as designed, in a room that gave it nothing else to work with.
Dry climates. Air conditioning. Forced-air heating. Airplanes. Any of those and the ingredient can work against you.
The fix is not more serum
It is two things, and they are both small.
One: apply it to damp skin. Not dripping, just not fully dry. Cleanse, leave your face slightly damp, and go straight in. You are handing the molecule water to bind so it does not have to go looking through your face for it.
Two: seal it. The layer that holds the water in is a lipid layer. Ceramides, or an oil-based serum, or a cream, applied while what is underneath is still damp.
Without it you have essentially set a glass of water on a windowsill in the sun and asked it to stay full.
That second step is the one people skip, and it is the one that decides whether the ingredient works at all.
Molecular weight, and why the label rarely tells you
Hyaluronic acid comes in different sizes, and the size changes what it does.
Large molecules stay on the surface. They form a smooth, hydrated film. You see the result immediately, and it does not go deep.
Smaller molecules travel further into the upper layers, where hydration lasts longer and shows up as softness rather than shine.
Most products use one size, usually the large one, because it gives the fastest visible payoff. A formula built with several weights together hydrates at more than one level, which is why the effect holds instead of fading by lunchtime.
The label almost never tells you which you are buying. If a brand has gone to the trouble of using multiple weights, they will say so.
What it will not do
It will not build collagen.
It will not fade a dark spot.
It will not fill a line permanently.
The plumping effect is water, and water is temporary by nature. The ingredient is being clear about what it is. The injectable fillers people are thinking of are also hyaluronic acid, but they are cross-linked into a gel and placed under the skin with a needle. A serum on your face is a different thing entirely, and any brand implying otherwise is selling you a needle's results in a bottle.
More is not better either. Past roughly two percent, hyaluronic acid gets tacky, pills under makeup, and does nothing extra for you.
How we formulate with it
I use hyaluronic acid. I have never once used it alone, and I would not sell it that way.
F18 Rose & Kakadu Plum Hyaluronic Serum is built with multiple molecular weights so the hydration works at more than one depth, and the ceramides and olive-derived squalane are already in the formula. The seal is in the bottle. That is deliberate, and it is why it behaves in dry climates when other hyaluronic serums do not. A word on how much. I am heavy handed with serum, always have been, and I have wiped it out of my own lashes more times than I would like to admit. You need less than you think. A hyaluronic layer that feels tacky is one that will pill under whatever you put on top of it.

One practical note. Water-based formulas have the shortest runway of anything we make, roughly four to eight months at peak potency, so use your hyaluronic serum while the actives are at full strength. What shifts over time is potency, not safety. I would much rather you finish a bottle and see your face change than keep one pristine on a shelf.
The short version
Hyaluronic acid does not give your skin water. It decides where the water goes.
Give it something to work with, and put a lid on it.
That is the whole trick, and it costs you nothing.
